The Siege at Tanveers

Leopold, or Leo, as his friends used to call him leaned against the remains of Tanveer’s southern interior wall. He wrapped the remains of a torn shirt, pulled from the remains of a dead man beside him, around his head and wiped away hair that had become caked with dried blood. All around him he heard the screams of men, the roaring of demons, and the scent of death, fire, and brimstone was heavy in the air. Tanveer was a remote village in Tel’fahria’s southern hemisphere, and a farming community to boot. It had a small contingent of Tel’fahrian warriors, and most of them were dead. True, there were no Tel’fahrians that didn’t serve in some capacity as soldiers, but they were not prepared for the onslaught brought down upon their otherwise quiet community. Human freeman, who had been out hunting along the village perimeter reported the demons several days ago. Messengers were sent to the capital, but until then that small contingent of soldiers, any Tel’fahrian able to life a weapon, and the humans who lived amongst them were left to fend for themselves. The humans, and the Tel’fahrians with the skill for it quickly went about assembling whatever fortifications they could manage, even destroying or blockading roads where they could. In the meanwhile that score of Tel’fahrian warriors engaged the demons in small skirmishes from their battle lines back to the village perimeter. Numerically they couldn’t hope to face their foes in outright combat, thus, small probing attacks served to slow down their progress and drew out only small groups which were more manageable. Even as the fortifications went up, and preparations were made for a siege, the demons continued to expand their battle line until the continually waning garrison of soldiers found themselves holding the very gates against an onslaught of creatures. That was two days ago. Most of the village had been burned, if any of the Tel’fahrian warriors stationed in the settlement still lived he hadn’t seen them since they went over the southern wall under the cover of darkness to attempt a flanking attack the day before last. Leo, and the rest of the humans in the settlement, braced the southern wall with rubble and whatever else they could gather together.

They defended it with polearms, bows, magic and whatever meager missiles and explosives they could manage. For a time he thought they were faring remarkably well, and a battle certainly ought to seem that way to a young man absent knowledge of war that couldn’t recognize a probing attack for what it was. Once the demons had gauged and tested their defenses their second wave was overwhelmingly powerful. They routed the humans back to the solid stone interior walls, and even the walls did not stem their furious assault. It seemed to Leo, as he sat up and glanced about, that he was the only man yet alive on this section of the wall. He tried to get to his feet, but fell to his hands and knees and vomited more from the smell than anything else. He managed to get to his feet by using the remains of the walls inner gate, found a mostly serviceable spear, and leaned around the corner to peer out across the mangled corpses that lay strewn before the gate. Imps and lesser demons picked over the corpses. Some fed, and others fought each other for bobbles and loot. As he leaned a little further out, clutching the spear tightly as his head wound continued to throb, a stone broke loose from the wall and struck one of the metal gates with a loud clang. Several of the demons and imps clamored over the corpses and began making their way to his hiding spot. His breathing quickened, palms sweating, and he thought he might be better falling on his own spear than letting them take him. He tried to escape under his own power, but tripped over a corpse and the sound of a sickening splat as he landed in someone’s burned entrails was all the more indicative to his would be pursuers that he was there. He rolled to his back just as one of the imps made its way through the gate, calling out with what one might only describe as glee as he spotted Leo. The sound of beating wings turned his gaze skyward, and silhouetted against the sun he could make out a Tel’fahrian. It was a male, large even for one of their kind. He was not subtle as he landed, and made no effort to mask his arrival from the small horde that waited beyond the gate. His armor was etched with tiny runes one had to be very close to make out clearly. His armor was ancient, but nevertheless regal and well maintained. It was the sort Leo had never seen before. A pair of swords were crossed just beneath his wings, but he did not bother to draw them to deal with the imp that had spotted Leo. Before the creature could retreat beyond the gate the warrior was upon it, and he did not bother to silence it as he beat it to death with his gauntlets. Leo had heard tales of these violent but unmatched warriors. Few humans who lived in Tel’fahria had ever seen one of them, they stood apart from the very societies they were charged with guarding. He was one of the War Kindred.

Arimus tossed the broken body of the imp aside, glancing backwards over his shoulder as he gave a nod to the human who lay in a pile of corpses only a short distance away. It was as much respect as a war kindred might ever pay a human, after all, his survival up to this point was more than likely the result of luck rather than skill. Even if it was only to be for a short time, the duration of this battle, to stand on the soil of Tel’fahria again was not unwelcome. He would route the demons as his brother asked, and then return ‘home’ to fracture, and continue the war. Other war kindred would be called home, he had no doubt, but Arimus needed to be gone before they arrived. He slid one of his swords free from its sheath as he rounded the smashed gate and looked out over the fields of the dead, thick with demons. He felt their gazes on him, smiling broadly as he waded into the thick of them. At least he would be entertained, if only for a while.

Twilight Chronicles

Odd how the oppressive nature of a siege, led by a demonic prince no less, compels a warrior to set aside his blades long enough to chronicle what has transpired in his life. At least as much as he cares to reveal to any that might come to find his records later. It is with this thought that I set out to begin to chronicle my story and the stories of those with whom I travel. Some I call friends, some I call enemies, but their stories are no less pertinent to my own.

When I assumed the role of Harbinger to the Twilight Vanguard, after my brother was called home following the death of our father, I was intrigued at the prospect of meeting some of the men and women he’d left behind. In my travels throughout Britannia, even as I wandered alone, I often heard of their deeds, their valor. Even with one of the Archon’s blood charting the course of events, like me, my brother was an obscure stranger here at his outset. Marius, as he was once known, had no obligation to do anything besides wait for his time to be called home. Instead he amassed a horde of wealth as an adventurer, acquired a sizable keep on an island in the far flung reaches of eastern Britannia, and founded the Twilight Vanguard for the explicit purpose of defending the whole of Fracture where the nobility, the gentry, and even the monarchy might fail.

Make no mistake, we are no band of white knights, nor are we an order of paladins. We were not during my brother’s reign, and perhaps even less so in my own. What I learned almost immediately when I assumed my role was that in our time apart my brother had developed a side I had never seen. True, he was not war kindred like I was, but he most certainly had all of the qualities necessary to assume his new role in Tel’fahria. He had won all this with none of the advisers, the wealth, the opulence, and anything else that would be granted to the newly minted leader of Tel’fahria. This is where his story ends, and ours begins. If nothing else, my brother had an eye for refining talent. A man who dared to burglarize the royal treasures of Britannia was certainly a brazen criminal, but was also a man of considerable skill. These were talents my brother recognized, wished to refine, and like any true son of Tel’fahria understood were necessary despite the objections of society on moral grounds. Anything with enough power to threaten the entirety of a world does not care to listen to the pitiful moaning of right and wrong. That is not to say that they were without moral qualities, but sometimes an appropriate application of solid indifference is what may be required to win the day. I came to find that the Vanguard’s ranks included, larcenists, pirates, holy men, merchants, experts in the arcane, all manner of fighters, and even spies. In terms of its racial makeup they ranged from simple humans all the way to tieflings, and anything one might imagine in between.

These are their stories.

Terian Lepos

I am known as Terian Lepos second son of Sovar Lepos leader of the Bregan D’aerthe a Mercenary Band of Rogue Drow who kill
for gold and riches.
Lets start at the beginning ,my father in his wisdom sent me at a very young age the The Academy to learn the art of murder ,mayhem and torture, which alas I failed at miserable to the disgust of my father and being the generous person he is he disowned me and told me never to return until I learned the ways of the true drow, what they maybe only the gods would know.
but it wasn’t only that there was the time with that slave girl, not only did I not understand why or what was the purpose of killing some being for no good reason, but I also did not understand why it was such a disgrace to fall in love with a slave girl ?she was pretty and willing, its not if I forced her, maybe my father would have respected me more if i had.and why put a price on my head
So I had no recourse but to flee in fear of my life, and I arrived here,a strange land with many humans, most look upon the Drow with a certain mistrust, but were use to that feared by humans, hated by elves and dwarf’s who knows what goes on in there minds.
But I must admit I did meet one strage human female dressed in the style of a lady of breading but chopping trees down in a place called Yew,she was neither friendly nor hostile I note a curtain indiferance, maybe to busy cutting logs in her fancy clothes,I wonder why she hasnt a slave or two to do those chores,I wonder if all the humans in this world are rather strange like this one,we will soon find out

Code Clean Up Effects Your Socket Gems!

To make the shard run better and fix bugs and other reasons I’ve been doing a bunch of code clean up.

This makes it easier for us to read our code, find and fix bugs, and make adjustments in the future.

While all that is well and good, I’ve had to restructure the way socket gems are created in the code. There will be no difference in them from your point of view, except that bugs related to them will be fixed. However the change in the way they are coded will cause any “free floating” socket gems to be deleted!

Free floating means in a normal container, laying on the ground, locked down, in your backpack.

Gems that are already socketed will not be deleted
Gems that are in the socket gem bag will not be deleted

For this reason it’s HIGHLY recommended that you store any and all socket gems inside of a socket gem bag or have them socketed.

The update that will cause this change will not go into effect for a week (on or after Saturday the 12th of march 2016), this will give plenty of time for you to get the socket gem bag (buy it from the black market).

Staff will NOT store them for you, Staff will NOT replace them if they get deleted.
We feel that a weeks time to save your socket gems is plenty of time for any one to be able to get a socket gem bag and store their gems properly for this venture.

Note: the socket gem bag is not a normal container, it is a special container that’s designed to keep item count down on our server, this helps in a few ways, reducing save times, expanding memory and increasing performance of the server, this is why gems inside a socket gem bag will not be deleted, they don’t actually exist as items while contained in these bags.
